Roger Byrne carries the weight and the responsibility of being captain of Manchester United. But he bears it with some distinction, leading by example both on the pitch, where he is a fleet-footed, quick-thinking inspiration, and off it, where he is a charismatic father-figure to the young team.
Currently playing as a full-back, he has played all over the field for United - notably at wing-half and on the left-wing. It is as a defender, however, where he is most at home. He now seems to be settled in that position for his club and England, for whom he made his debut in 1954 and is now a regular choice.
