Off the football pitch, Mark Jones is a gentle pipe-smoking, budgerigar collector. On the field of play, he is somehow transformed into a fierce, indefatigable rock of a man, the lynch-pin of the Manchester United defence.
His talents stem from his strength, his determination, and his ball-winning abilities, though once the job is done he relies on his team-mates to take the struggle to the opposition half. He has scored only once in 120 first team appearances.
Once captain of England schoolboys, and somewhat overdue a full England cap, Jones turned professional and made his first-team debut in 1950. |
