Liam Whelan

Republic of Ireland International

Liam Whelan

Position: Inside right

Born: Dublin, 1 April 1935

Previous club: Home Farm

Transfer fee: £0

Debut: Preston North End (A), 26 March 1935

Whelan - known as "Billy" to his fans in Manchester - may not be the most high-profile of players, but is probably one of the most underestimated of United's current crop of young players. Last season, for example, he racked up 33 goals in 51 first team games, and already has 4 Republic of Ireland caps to his name.

His finest moment to date in a United shirt came in last season's European Cup quarter final. With five minutes to go in the first leg, away to Atletico Bilbao, Whelan ran the ball more than half the length of the pitch, beating five defenders before smashing the ball into the net.
